beinghuman.jpg

Interested in learning beat-making with a twist? Come and (re)discover the rich and vibrant North African music tradition in this half-day workshop. Led by Dr. Cristina Moreno Almeida and well-known Moroccan rapper and producer Dizzy DROS, in this workshop participants will learn about the history and culture of Hip Hop in North Africa as well as a wide range of the local music traditions including Arab, Amazigh, Andalusi, and Gnawa. Dr. Moreno Almeida will present her research on the fascinating history and politics of rap music in Morocco. Then, participants will get hands-on into beat-making with Dizzy DROS learning how each element of a beat is made. Participants will have the chance to create their own beats from scratch bringing their own samples or using the ones provided by facilitators. Through the creation of hip hop beats, we invite participants to (re)connect with Arab, Amazigh, and African music cultural heritages.

Music production material and refreshments will be provided to participants.

This event is part of the Being Human festival, led by the school of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. For further info please see beinghumanfestival.org
