A phantasmagorical performance based on the novel by Arthur Solomonov
Featuring Anatoly Bely and Mikhail Borzykin
On stage are two remarkable artists: acclaimed actor Anatoly Bely and rock musician Mikhail Borzykin, frontman of the legendary band Televizor. Blending dramatic performance, literary narration and live music, Nathan creates a striking theatrical experience that is by turns absurd, darkly comic and unsettlingly relevant.
Based on Arthur Solomonov’s novel, the story follows the adventures of Nathan and a talking raccoon named Tugrik. Written on the eve of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the novel proved eerily prophetic. Its characters seize power, reshape societies, start wars, make peace, and move through every imaginable political and ideological transformation, from pacifism to militarism, from liberalism to authoritarianism.
As reality increasingly began to resemble fiction, the novel’s publication in Russia became impossible. It was eventually published in Austria by Danzig & Unfried.
Through humour, satire and music, Nathan explores power, propaganda, moral choice and the absurdity of contemporary history.
As Anatoly Bely says:
“The most important thing for me is that audiences will laugh. Today, laughter is a form of therapy. Perhaps the most powerful thing we can do is laugh at evil. That is exactly what we do in Nathan.”
Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes
